What We Do

St. Catharines Propulsion Plant proudly manufactures the Gen 5 V8 engine and the C8 dual clutch transmission which are shipped to GM assembly plants worldwide.

Subject to completing support agreements with federal and Ontario government partners, GM plans to invest at St. Catharines to manufacture new Ultium electric drive units for GM’s fast growing electric vehicle lineup. This investment plan would be expected to support around 500 jobs at the plant and enable the production of more than 400,000 EV drive units a year.

In August 2020, St. Catharines announced the completion of a C$28M cogeneration investment that enhances the operation’s competitiveness by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing future energy costs. This project provides 6.4MW of electricity from renewable landfill gas to the plant which represents approximately 35 per cent of the site’s electrical demand.

The cogeneration program recovers thermal energy that is typically considered waste to power and heat the facility, reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 70 per cent.
