IIHS is a third party group that has been researching vehicle safety for over 50 years. They award vehicles that meet their performance standard in front, side, rollover, and rear tests and have standard electronic stability control.
The U.S. Government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reviews and rates new vehicles. For the 2011 model year, the New Car Assessment Program has been revised to subject vehicles to more rigorous crash test procedures and the rating system changed to include a new "Overall Vehicle Score". 5-Stars is the highest possible rating.
