Co-op and Internships
Participants in the GM Canada Cooperative Education or Intern Programs gain valuable professional experience, develop an insider's understanding of how GM works, and earn money toward their educational expenses. These programs are designed to provide GM with a source of highly talented candidates while giving students valuable in-depth experience and a jump-start on their careers. As a result, a great percentage of new hires for GM salaried positions are selected from this pool of program participants. Their familiarity with the company, hands-on experience, and the personal and professional skills they've exhibited during program participation make these candidates very desirable while at the same time the traditional learning curve is significantly reduced. Many will join us as entry level professionals.
Program Requirements - Candidates should have a long-term interest in a career with General Motors upon graduation. Applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's or post graduate degree program at an accredited university. Candidates will be asked to present evidence of academic excellence and leadership potential.
Students who apply and are not selected may apply in subsequent years. Similarly, an applicant who is hired and who performs favourably while maintaining their academic standing, may be considered for an additional internship/co-op assignment.
The GM Cooperative Education Program
Co-op students have the opportunity to explore career options in a variety of areas while continuing with their class schedules. The hands-on, practical experience will make it easier for the student to decide on a specific career direction while the income from their work can help to defray educational expenses. Students participating in the Professional Experience Year Program (PEY), where a student's work term runs for a minimum of twelve months consecutively, are also a part of GM's Cooperative Education program.
Student Intern Program
This program offers university students on-the-job experience through temporary full-time positions, generally during the May to August time period, however some of our facilities also have long term internships up to 16 months in length. Students will be exposed to real work situations related to their academic program and have the opportunity to make valuable contributions within their teams and functional areas.
